Show is one-of–a-kind portraits of our furry friends created by WVSA ARTiculate artist apprentices. Enjoy live music, silent auction and meeting the artists at the opening reception. Now you have a chance to order a commissioned painting. Come to our gallery opening to meet our artists and experience first hand how your commissioned portrait is created and how your efforts support our artists and organization. Commission NOW! This project is sponsored by CVS Caremark All Kids Can & VSA arts. How do I commission a portrait? Easy! Please choose any option between 1-12. Upload or email your favorite photograph for our Artist Apprentices to transform them into a one-of-a-kind work of art that will change your room and warm your heart. You can pay online, by check, or in person. (Please note that no commission can be started without full payment.) We will contact you when we receive your information in the mail. When will my commission be ready? Our commission process is created to better serve students with special needs and gives freedom to our Artist Apprentices to create. Therefore we do not guarantee completion date or pick up date. When we receive your commission, a folder is created for you. Our Artist Apprentices go through the folders and pick the image that they can relate to and start painting. Our Artist Apprentices are encouraged to use their creative talent, therefore please understand that the painting you are ordering will be an interpretation of your photograph. We cannot guarantee your painting will be completed in the order your image was received. We allow our Artist Apprentices have the freedom to choose what image they would like to paint. After we receive your commission we will email you with in one week to let you know when to expect your painting. The first 60 commissions will have a spot in our June 12th 2008 show. Depending on our student’s special skills, styles and needs, they are divided to 2 groups, Abstract and Realistic: Our Realistic students are very good at realistic rendering and coloring, and you can expect a very recognizable rendition of your photograph. Our Abstract students are very good at stylizing their work to their unique interpretation. Commission NOW! Please consider donating. “Every Dog Has its Day: Celebrating our Canine Companions” Part III

On June 12th we opened our doors to artists and animal lovers alike for our 2008 Dog Show gallery opening.  As visitors walked in, they were greeted by the lovable faces of the commissioned pet portraits hanging throughout the gallery.  The ARTiculate gallery space was transformed into a pet lovers paradise with an abundance of pet themed prizes to bid on in our silent auction and free baggies of pet treats that were given as favors.  The guests and artists also enjoyed dancing the night away to a live band and munching on delicious appetizers donated by popular local restaurants and catering companies.  Some of the favorites among the food were sushi from Wasabi and classic Mediterranean dishes from Med.  It was a wonderful experience for the artists and the patrons who commissioned them to finally connect for the first time in such a lively, fun filled atmosphere.  The artists were all radiant as they admired their prominently displayed masterpieces in the gallery.  Overall, the night was one to remember and was enjoyed by all who attended.

“Every Dog Has its Day: Celebrating our Canine Companions” Part I & Part II

This is where it all started. The pampered puppy party in November 2006 was a time for animal-lovers from all around DC, and around the country to immortalize their pet. The artists were able to capture the essence and personality of each and every animal. The enthusiasm from pet stores, organizations was overwhelming and that is where the “Every Dog Has Another Day” came about in February 2007. The commission response became too much for the artists to do for one show, so instead WVSA took the pressure off by adding a Part II to the exhibition. This not only encouraged the artists to work at their own pace, but also allow the artists to work on other projects or subject matter.

"From Beethoven to BB King: WVSA Unplugged"

This jazzy exhibition celebrated all types of music.

Our Artist Apprentices fused the visual arts with performing arts to present an “unplugged” version of our favorite musicians, instruments and concert moments. The show was comprised of one-of-a-kind music images. Rock, jazz, hip-hop, pop or something more exotic—this show featured a melting pot of genres guaranteed to please the music-lover in everyone!

Also at this exhibition D.C.-based choreographer Jane Jerardi and SAIL (School for Arts in Learning) students presented Chance, a set of short video-dances that were projected in public spaces. In a two month long after-school program, Jerardi has lead SAIL 5th and 6th graders through the process of developing movement and dance improvisations. As the culmination of her residency, Jerardi and her students will present their striking video-dances, which explore chance meetings, playful dances and moments of synchronicity.

"ART in Bloom"
CVS/pharmacy supports DC youth artists with disabilities

WVSA ARTiculate ARTist Apprentices are displayed 30 original artworks, in 30 major DC area CVS/pharmacy stores, to promote their June 14th – August 9th show, “ART in Bloom,” sponsored by CVS All Kids Can and VSA arts.

This show will gave our students the opportunity to share their artwork with the public, while allowing them to demonstrate the life and career skills gained from ARTiculate Employment Training Program. “Art in Bloom” was a spring time themed shows that captured everything from the beautiful DC Cherry Blossoms to interpretations of great master’s work. The artists enjoyed creating images that celebrate the awakening of Mother Nature.

Opening Night Reception was on June 14, 2007 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. At the opening reception, commissioners and general public viewed the images for the first time, as well as enjoyed live music, refreshments and meet the artists. “Learn to Earn: Passport to Work”

WVSA ARTiculate Employment Training Program was what the summer of 2007 was all about. The ARTist Apprentices focused on developing the skills necessary to become a young professional in this ‘work focused’ show. This exhibition gave the students the opportunity to share their artwork with the public, while allowing them to demonstrate the life and career skills gained from ARTiculate Employment Training Program.

The artists portrayed all different ways that people work. There were many studies done of Realist artists from the early 19th century such as Courbet and Millet. The Summer Program focuses on a range of activities, which were also displayed at this gallery opening. "Around the World and Back"

WVSA ARTiculate Gallery and the theme of travel allowed the imagination in the studios to go all the places only found in dreams. The Artist Apprentices were able to take the public on an exclusive tour around the world through these wonderful paintings. During the 2007 holiday season the artists started in NYC by looking straight up at the Lady Liberty and then were swept off to Asia to get a taste of all the exotic spices. "ART IN MOTION"

Sports are not just fun and games… ok maybe they are. In March 2007 the Artist Apprentices used their minds and muscles to create images of all different types of sports; baseball, football, basketball, just to name a few. With March Madness finishing, the National’s Opening Day, and Capitals on their way to the Stanley Cup; WVSA thought that what time was better to welcome sport-goers into the gallery.

The Artist Apprentices used the idea of sports to further look at the human form. With each twist and turn of a player the artists would be able to learn how to recreate that physical motion.  Not only motion, but also emotion was portrayed on the faces of many of the athletes that were interacting with their crowd.

Outside Exhibitions

Through WVSA’s Top of the Arts Space Rental Program the gallery is available for rental between shows.

WVSA ARTiculate Gallery is a wonderful space to hold any type of art show. The intimate setting, and location make it a no-brainer. Down the street from the 14th Street art galleries and only 4 blocks from the White House. It’s a dream space for any artist looking for a space to show their artwork.

The money that is raised through the Top of the Arts Rental Program goes directly to support WVSA Arts Connection and all of our programs.

Public Relations and Marketing Intern
The successful applicant will have the following responsibilities:
-Assist ARTiculate student participants and Gallery staff with the day-to-day retail operations to include sales transactions, Gallery opening reception planning and promotions, corporate sponsorships and artwork commissions.
-Assist in promotion and management of the organization’s ART On the Move and Top of The ART programs.
The ideal candidate will have experience in public relations/marketing (experience in a gallery/retail environment a plus), experience obtaining corporate sponsorship for event venues, excellent multi-tasking and time management skills, excellent communication, administrative and customer service skills and a driving passion for the arts. WVSA is located conveniently in downtown Washington and is easily accessible by Metro. We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic in becoming a part of a rewarding experience in equipping DC youth with educational and employment skills through arts integrated programs. Gallery & Design Intern
The successful applicant will have the following responsibilities:
-Greet and assist visitors to the Gallery;
-Assist with gallery show preparations, including taking down and sorting work from prior show, sorting new artwork for display, assisting with hanging the artwork, cleaning the Gallery and other opening preparations as requested;
-Cover the Gallery, handle sales, and answer questions about the Gallery and artwork;
-Provide input and recommendations to the Gallery staff to promote Gallery awareness and activities;
-Assist with sponsorship solicitations;
-Assist with Art on the Move and Top of the Arts promotions;
-Work with the Manager of Design to create a new website for WVSA and update website content as needed;
-Work with the Manager of Design for all graphic design needs within the Gallery including signage, graphic displays, advertisements and special event invitations;
-Distribute press releases for gallery shows;
-Work with vendors/students/staff to set prices for products for sale in Gallery;
-Work with the ARTiculate students on commissioned work as needed;
-Perform other duties in support of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have experience in sales/marketing (preferably in a gallery/retail environment), public relations and event planning (emphasis on obtaining sponsorship for event venues); excellent multi-tasking and time management skills; excellent communication, administrative and customer service skills and driving passion for the arts. Project Management Intern
The ideal candidate will be pursing a business degree and wants experience in finance management, auditing skills and training in a non-profit finance department. Skills preferred would include at least junior year standing with Accounting 101 and proficient in Excel, Power Point and Macintosh systems.
• Assists in managing a system to track all grant activities including contact information, funds, awarded and, status.
• Assists in coordinating grant budgets with Finance.
• Develops contacts within private and corporate foundation representatives to support WVSA strategic plan.
• Coordinates the management of awarded grants to appropriate WVSA staff insuring proper fulfillment and reporting per grant guidelines.
• Performs other duties as assigned in support of the organization.
There are a range of skills that can be developed while interning at WVSA, some of them are: writing skills, finance/budget skills, research, project management, interdepartmental collaboration, and community organizing.

DEVELOPMENT and COMMUNICATIONS
WVSA’s Development and Communications department focuses on raising funds and increasing community awareness and involvement about WVSA arts connection.
Development Intern duties may include, but are not limited to:
Grant management: research, writing, and tracking
Fundraising: writing, including thank you letters
Data entry

All aspects of direct mail appeals, including writing, mailing, tracking responses, and sending donation acknowledgements and thanks you notes
Administrative tasks: answering and making phone calls, running errands, filing, faxing, copying, and pitching in whenever and wherever necessary.

Outreach Intern duties include:
Writing and distributing press releases as needed
Updating press kits and distribute as needed
Building rental related tasks

ARTiculate Employment Summer Program Intern

The ARTiculate Employment Summer Program is a model for vocational and life skills training for students with disabilities and special needs looking for a successful transition from school to the world of work. The program boasts over 6 years of summer success in serving over 300 participants. A part of ARTiculate is The ARTiculate Gallery, a full-functioning gallery with six yearly gallery openings.  Assignments for a summer intern will be:

DUTIES:

• Assist in orchestrating curriculum, materials and equipment in studios during classes at ARTiculate, including the following
• Set up studios for classes (organizing materials, work space)
• Assist in carrying out curriculum (providing hands-on support to participants with various art techniques/techniques such as acrylic/watercolor painting, printing techniques etc.)
• Assist in monitoring the participants’ workplace behavior/etiquette (language, sign-in/out, goal planning, implementing deadlines etc.)
• Break down classes (clean-up, dismissal, collecting materials etc.)
• Provide assistance to participants in the IT component of the ARTiculate program, such as word processing, digital photography & imaging, internet use etc.
• Assist instructors in maintaining classroom logs, carrying out written assessments etc.

HELPFUL BACKGROUND qualification:

• Experience in working with youth (with disabilities), preferably through the arts
• Background in using Apple Macintosh based software, digital photography
• Background in visual arts / graphic design

HOURS:            

Mon – Thu            9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Tue – Thu            4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

18 – 24 hours/week

SAIL School for Arts In Learning
The School for Arts In Learning is a Public Charter Elementary (K-12) School that encourages students to achieve their maximum potential while developing an awareness of the role of the arts in their daily lives. SAIL’s mission is to provide an appropriate individualized education, focusing on children who have learning disabilities other special learning styles that make it difficult for them to succeed in traditional classroom settings. SAIL is committed to encouraging students to express themselves freely without fear of judgment or embarrassment, and motivating them to appreciate the arts as an intimately personal expression of their knowledge.

SAIL Intern opportunities include:

Student teachers: Student teachers’ duties and responsibilities will be evaluated on a case-to-case basis, usually following guidelines given by sending University or College. A classroom will be assigned, and curriculum discussed.

Artists: Visual, dance movement, music, etc. Duties will vary dependent on area of expertise and needs of the school.

Arts Educators: Individuals with a background in either the Arts or Education, who seek to become proficient in the other.

Research: Contribute to various research projects
